When an ACL Injury Takes You Out of the Game
An ACL tear or strain can derail months of training in an instant. Each step, cut, or jump becomes a reminder that something is wrong. Without the right rehabilitation, you risk lingering instability, recurrent injury, and loss of athletic confidence.

At All Elite Physiotherapy & Performance, we guide you through a structured, evidence-based ACL rehab pathway. Every step aims to return you to sport safer, stronger, and more resilient.
Who Is ACL Rehab For?
ACL rehabilitation is not just for elite athletes. Our program is designed for anyone who has sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury and wants to return to an active, pain-free lifestyle.

We support:

- Athletes recovering from ACL tears during sports like rugby or football

- Netball and basketball players managing knee instability from sudden twists or falls

- Workers who sustained ACL injuries on the job

- Students and young athletes building strength after injury

- Weekend warriors and gym-goers aiming to return to fitness

- Patients recovering after ACL surgery who need structured rehab

The focus is always on getting you back to the activities you love, with the confidence that your knee is strong, stable, and supported for the future.

The ACL Rehabilitation Process
Step 0: Prehabilitation Before Surgery

Step 1: Acute Injury Management
In the first phase, we focus on reducing pain, swelling, and protecting the knee. Controlled rest, gentle mobility, and targeted treatments create the foundation for recovery.

Step 2: Restoring Range of Motion and Early Activation
Once pain is under control, we work on regaining knee mobility and activating key muscle groups such as the quadriceps and hamstrings. This prevents stiffness and prepares the joint for strengthening.

Step 3: Strength and Stability Training
Progressive resistance exercises are introduced to rebuild strength in the injured leg and surrounding muscles. Stability and balance training ensure the knee can handle daily and athletic demands.

Step 4: Functional and Sport-Specific Conditioning
Your rehab advances to drills that replicate the movements of your sport. Speed, agility, and coordination exercises are tailored to your goals, whether that’s returning to rugby, netball, or general fitness.

Step 5: Return-to-Sport Readiness
Before clearance, we perform thorough testing of strength, stability, and confidence. This ensures you are physically and mentally ready to return to competition or full activity without hesitation.

FAQs

Can I start ACL rehab before surgery?

Yes, this is often called “prehabilitation.” Starting physiotherapy before ACL surgery helps improve strength, mobility, and swelling control, which can lead to better outcomes post-surgery. Building quadriceps and hamstring strength early also shortens recovery time after surgery and lowers the risk of complications.

Our physiotherapists can create a safe program to prepare your knee and body for surgery, giving you the best chance of a smooth rehabilitation process.

Do I need a referral to begin ACL rehab?

In most cases, you do not need a doctor’s referral to start physiotherapy for ACL rehab. Many patients book directly with us after an injury or diagnosis. If you are working under a specialist or surgeon, we will collaborate with them to align your rehab plan with their recommendations. This ensures you receive coordinated care throughout your recovery journey.

What happens if I don’t do proper ACL rehabilitation?

Your first session includes a detailed assessment of your injury, your sport’s demands, and your personal goals. We’ll then create a clear, step-by-step rehab plan with exercises you can start right away.

Can I train or go to the gym during ACL rehab?

Yes, but training must be carefully structured and monitored. Our physiotherapists will guide you on safe exercises you can continue at the gym while protecting your healing ACL. This may include upper body training, controlled lower body work, and conditioning exercises that don’t overload the knee.

As you progress, we’ll gradually reintroduce more challenging movements so you can train confidently without compromising your recovery.

How do you know when I’m ready to return to sport?

Return-to-sport decisions are based on a combination of strength testing, movement quality assessments, and psychological readiness. We use objective measures such as limb symmetry, hop tests, and balance evaluations to confirm your knee is strong and stable.

Sport-specific drills are then introduced to simulate game demands and ensure you can perform safely. Only when these criteria are met will we clear you to return, reducing the risk of re-injury and giving you peace of mind.
